Medical Terminology / A&P / Academic Skills

196 Hours - 13 Weeks
This course is designed to introduce students to the SouthernTech LPN Program, and their role as a nursing student. They are presented with the study skills and resources needed for academic success. Anatomy, Physiology, and Medical Terminology are also included in this course. The content is designed using a systems approach providing knowledge of the language of medicine along with the study of the structure and function of the body applicable to nursing practice. 

Nursing Skills

404 Hours - 20 Weeks
The Nursing Skills course is an introduction to nursing care. Topics include utilizing the nursing process, performing assessment/data collection, and providing patient education. Principles and skills of nursing practice, documentation, and an introduction to physical assessment/data collection, and IV therapy. Emphasis will be placed on developing critical thinking and clinical judgement skills. Additional areas of focus include professionalism, confidentiality, legal/ethical responsibilities, patient advocacy, best practices, and standards of care. The students will also complete 88 hours of clinical experience. 

Pharmacology

140 Hours - 7 Weeks
This course provides a review of basic mathematical concepts for safe medication administration. Introductory principles of pharmacology including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, common adverse/side effects, and contraindications will be discussed. Emphasis is placed on drug classifications and nursing care related to the safe administration of medications. The students will also complete 64 hours of clinical experience.

Medical Surgical Nursing

364 Hours - 14 Weeks
This course focuses on the nursing care of adult/older adult patients with common medical/surgical/mental health problems using the Body System approach as the framework. Emphasis is placed on physiological disorders and psychological and emotional stressors that require management in an acute and/or long-term care facility. The students will also complete 144 hours of clinical experience. 

Nursing Specialties

190 Hours - 10 Weeks
This course includes content in the nursing specialty areas of maternal and newborn nursing, pediatric nursing, and mental health nursing. Mental health nursing includes a focus on the role of the practical nurse. Content includes the universal concepts needed to care for clients experiencing common mental health alterations, mental health issues, and client care needs that frequently challenge the geriatric client. Pediatric nursing content include normal growth and development along with the physical, emotional, and social needs of the pediatric client; apply fundamental nursing skills and principles in the care of the pediatric client and family; and describe various pediatric disorders. Maternal - Newborn is designed to familiarize the student with the holistic care approach for the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum patient and the neonate. Students will complete 48 hours of clinical experience during this course. 

Leadership

56 Hours - 3 Weeks
This course is designed to provide transition from student to LPN. Leadership and delegation skills are enhanced as the student functions in the role of team leader. A 40-hour preceptor rotation assists with giving the student experience of a day to day job as an LPN. The course involves job preparation with resume review and cover letter assignments, as well as establishing a professional social media presence.
