Southern Tech, Well Represented on Stage at Conference

Southern Tech had a host of winners on Stage at the 50th Annual Career Tech Summer Conference early in August in Oklahoma City.

Southern Tech was recognized for two awards this year, Gold Star and Distinguished Achievement. The coveted Gold Star School Award was received for the 10th time in the 50 years of existence.  This award is given to Career Tech’s who meet the minimum criteria including student placement, retention, and completion.

Kenny Shade, Academic Enhancement instructor,  accepted the OKACTE Distinguished Achievement Award for Southern Tech for his Flipped Classroom. This award was given to Kenny for his innovation in taking math learning to a different level. He recorded his lessons so students watched them at home and he helped them with homework in his math classroom at Southern Tech. Kenny teaches Algebra II and Geometry at Southern and supervises other online classes. These videos are free for anyone to view and are available at www.sotech.edu then search MATH AGE.

Individual instructor awards received at the conference for OKACTE Outstanding New Teachers for their divisions were Kristi Inselman, Nurse Assistant Instructor, and Stephen Hadwin, Design and Fabrication Instructor.  These are two instructors at Southern Tech that have taught more than two years but less than five and were recognized for their dedication and service as new teachers.

The OKACTE New Professional award is given to those working at Southern Tech less than five years and have actively shown growth and initiative in the Career Tech system.  Whitney Elmore, Career Advisor, and Angela Baker, Cost Accountant, were awarded the Oklahoma ACTE New Professional Award.  These two will be given a stipend from OKACTE to attend the National Career Tech conference in December.
