Each month SouthernTech Cosmetology students service Elmbrook and Lakeland Manor Nursing Homes. When asked why they donate their time to do this their instructor, Kristal McCathern said, “I want my students to experience every avenue our industry has to offer. I’ve had several students start careers at nursing home salons. It’s important they know how to relate to every age and gender along with all of the other factors in life they will have to deal with. Every opportunity I have to saturate my students into a work based situation, I will take to help build their employability skills.” The students give haircuts, facials, manicures, and styles. This year the Cosmetology students also made Christmas cards they took to the residents rooms and the students said the residents were very thankful. Z’Khia Seamster (Ardmore) said, “It’s very rewarding, it’s not about the service being performed but the loving and joyful experience.”
